What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

What Is the Creeping Feeling in My Legs?

Ever get that unexplained urge to move your legs? Something you might describe as an antsy, creeping, pulling, itching or numbness? A myriad of words have been used to describe Restless Leg Syndrome. Patients of The Vein Institute of Jacksonville report any of multiple particular sensations, but the condition invariably involves the compulsion to move.

RLS Can Lead to Additional Issues

Known informally as RLS, Restless Leg Syndrome occurs most often in middle-aged and older adults and can cause various secondary issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, confusion, or slowed thought processes. RLS sufferers have trouble sitting during car and air travel or through classes, sermons, and meetings. These secondary symptoms, of course, can lead to problems at work and at home, becoming both a medical problem and a quality-of-life issue. And while the legs are most commonly affected, the same condition can also affect arms, torso, and even phantom limbs (referring to the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body).

Restless Vein Syndrome Can Be Caused by an Array of Issues

While the cause is unknown in most patients, RLS may be passed down genetically in families. Commonly associated medical conditions include iron deficiency, varicose veins, folate deficiency, magnesium deficiency, fibromyalgia, sleep apnea, uremia, diabetes, thyroid disease, peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, and certain autoimmune disorders such as Sjögren’s syndrome, celiac disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Many physicians believe that ADHD and hypoglycemia are common factors as well. Certain medications can cause or worsen RLS. These medications include some antiemetics; certain antihistamines used in over-the-counter cold medications; and many antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants.

There Are Many Ways to Treat RLS

Luckily, there are multiple treatment options for Restless Leg Syndrome. The Vein Institute of Jacksonville has successfully helped many RLS patients with prescribed medications, iron supplements, and tips for managing symptoms, such as adopting an active lifestyle and reducing stress.
